One Week Post-Bootcamp: Rebuilding Discipline and Direction, and Failed Exam

It’s been a week since I graduated from Ironhack.

I already miss the structure I had with the fixed schedule and having people around with the same purpose. But I still did two CTFs with Mathieu (Ironhack classmate) this week about git.

I also did some studying for the CompTIA Security+ but not as much as I wanted. I’m studying through the Jason Dion’s Udemy course, which is also the way I did when I passed the A+ and Network+.

I spent one day sending applications, maybe about 20. I’m not sure if that’s the best strategy because I mostly sent spontaneous applications. Some of them I sent with a cover letter. I tried to spend time on each application sent but maybe I need another strategy because getting into a Junior Pentesting role is not going to be easy. I readjusted my CV to each application but I’m still not feeling confident. I’m gonna give it maybe 2 months until I change to my backup plan, which is applying for SOC jobs. It really isn’t what I enjoy but it might be the best start for me to get into pentesting. I’m trying to think on how can I get to the place I want and I like to ask ChatGPT questions about it to have an idea. I’m thinking about studying for the Security+ in the morning and then for the eJPT in the afternoon. That’s probably what I’m gonna do starting this week. I don’t know why I’m thinking too much, I should just do it. I also want to keep doing at least one TryHackMe room a day. Maybe in 2 months I could get both certifications.

Talking about certifications… I had my second attempt on the Blue Team Level 1 exam, and… I failed again. I just needed one more question right. I was really confident! I don’t understand. All the timestamps’ questions failed… and I asked for a review because maybe I wrote with the wrong format. There was also another one that I was so sure it was right but, again, maybe it’s the format. I was so pissed… I’m just hating SOC more and more. I’m still gonna keep pushing though.

So now I need a plan, that’s what I’ve been trying to do this week. I made a zoom link for everyone to join from the Bootcamp so we can study together. I hope this next week more people join. I’m also going to follow the same schedule I had. About the job applications, I’m still not sure if I send more or if I just keep studying and send them after getting the certifications. I guess I should do the career services from Ironhack to get some guidance about that.

Not the best post-bootcamp start but I’m working on it.
